Mayer Kirshenblatt Jewish Childhood Notecard Set Overview
Mayer Kirshenblatt was born in 1916 in the Polish town of Opatów (called Apt in Yiddish). In 1934 he emigrated to Toronto, where he became a house painter and opened his own paint store. At age seventy-three, with his family's urging, he taught himself to paint what he could remember about his childhood. His daughter, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, had been interviewing him since 1967. Their forty-year collaboration culminated in They Called Me Mayer July: Painted Memories of a Jewish Childhood in Poland before the Holocaust, published by University of California Press in conjunction with the Judah L. Magnes Museum in 2007. A labor of love, tribute to a distinctive imagination, and brilliant portrait of life in one Jewish hometown, the book won the Canadian Jewish Book Award and the J. . I. Segal Book Award.Drawn from the book, the works reproduced here are also part of the eponymous exhibition visiting the Magnes Museum (Berkeley), The Jewish Museum (New York City), The Breman Museum (Atlanta), Jewish Historical Museum (Amsterdam), Museum of the History of Polish Jews (Warsaw), and Galicia Jewish Museum (Kraków).
